Michigan, 4 Other States Have Abortion on Ballot
Voters in five states will weigh in on abortion in this year's election in the aftermath of the Supreme Court's ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade and left abortion rights to the states.
Since the high court's decision this summer, lawmakers in a dozen states have passed near-total bans, and the issue has been thrust to the center of races around the country.
Michigan is asking voters some variation of whether they want to establish a right to abortion.
Proponents of the effort to protect abortion rights in the Michigan constitution collected more signatures than any other ballot initiative in state history to put it before voters. If passed, the ballot initiative would end a 1931 ban on abortion.
Opponents say the measure could have far-reaching effects on other state laws, including one that requires parental notification of an abortion for a minor.
