Man Dies in Vehicle/Pedestrian Crash After Hitting Deer in Mason Co.
Just after 6 a.m. this morning, emergency crews were dispatched to a vehicle/pedestrian crash on South Scottville Road near Sippy Road, in Mason County’s Eden Township.
Upon arrival, Mason County Sheriff's Office deputies found a man, later identified as 44-year-old Elmond Edward Hamilton III of Walkerville, with life-threatening injuries lying in the road being attended to by a nurse who happened upon the crash. The Sheriff's Office states deputies and first responders with Riverton and Custer Township FD’s assisted in the treatment until LIFE EMS arrived. This treatment included the application of a tourniquet to a serious leg injury. Despite the lifesaving measures, Hamilton was pronounced dead at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.
The crash occurred after Hamilton had hit a deer while northbound on Scottville Road and his vehicle was disabled in the roadway with one high beam headlight on and his airbags deployed. Hamilton was standing outside his vehicle when a southbound vehicle unknowingly approached the crash scene and struckHamilton, who was standing alongside his vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle is a 28-year-old Ludington MI man, who was uninjured.
The Sherriff's Office says at this time, neither speed nor alcohol appears to be factors in the crash.
