The 20-20 census questionnaire has driven more questions…than answers.

One question that seemed to have been missing on the questionnaire, sexual orientation and gender identity.

And now some Individuals are feeling left out. Among LGTQ people, the census form only asked about same-sex couples living together.

But this could change soon. Recognizing the difficulty it is to have been open up and reveal information many are sensitive to.

The U.S. Census Bureau is requesting millions of dollars to study how best to ask about sexual orientation and gender identity.

Because those results could provide much more accurate information. This comes as the US passport now offers an “X’ in addition to M for male and F for female, for non-binary individuals.

The bureau is particularly interested in examining how answers are provided by “proxies”, such as a parent, spouse or someone else in a household who isn’t the person about whom the question is being asked.

Other federal agencies already ask about sexual orientation, primarily in health surveys, wording and design is important since that can affect accuracy.

This research can help measure the growing and diverse LGBTQ population in the US, And the census is looking t stay up to date with the changes.
