Attorney General Dana Nessel stopped by Mackinaw Trail Middle School in Cadillac today to take a look at how Cadillac Area Public Schools spent grant funds awarded to them to beef up security.

Nessel walked the halls of the middle school and took a look at the new measures put in place, including a more comprehensive surveillance system, enhanced door locks, and walkie-talkies so school officials can communicate with each other in case of an emergency.

Cadillac was one of 19 districts to receive security funding from the Michigan State Police.

The district alone was handed $442,000.

Now, with the recent improvements, CAPS should be set for 30 to 50 years on the infrastructure end, and 15 years for the technology.

Superintendent Jennifer Brown says the upgrades are part of an effort to improve the mental and physical health of students and added that the recent Oxford High School shooting downstate proved informative.

The Attorney General said the trips to grant recipients across the state came out of a need to look at how schools have implemented security measures and whether those techniques could have prevented the Oxford tragedy, as well as future incidents.
