Texas Man Convicte in 1st Capitol Riot Trial
In what was the first trial among hundreds of cases arising from last year’s Capitol riot, a Texas man was convicted Tuesday of storming the building with a holstered handgun.
A jury also convicted 49-year-old Guy Wesley Reffitt of Wylie, TX of obstructing Congress’ joint session to certify the Electoral College vote on January 6th 2021, of interfering with police officers who were guarding the Capitol and of threatening his two teenage children if they reported him to law enforcement after the attack.
The verdict could be a bellwether for many other Capitol riot cases as it could afford the Justice Department prosecutors more leverage in plea negotiations and discourage other defendants from gambling on trials of their own.
Reffitt will be sentenced June 8th where he could receive at least 20 years in prison.
