ARLINGTON, Va. -- Bob Dole has been laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors.

About 100 close family members and former colleagues were in attendance at the private service.

Dole passed away on December fifth at the age of 98. Days later he was given the honor to lay in state under the U.S. Capitol dome and had a funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.

The politician and attorney served nearly 36 years in Congress and was the G.O.P.'s leader in the Senate for more than a decade.

He was also celebrated as a World War II hero and advocate for his follow veterans, spearheading the drive to get the World War II Memorial built on the National Mall in Washington.

He also was known for his self deprecating wit. As Bob Dole said, “Things are going to get better. Be optimistic.”
