UNDATED (AP) — LSU and football coach Ed Orgeron (OHR’-zhih-rahn) have agreed to part ways after this season, according to multiple media reports. The news comes 21 months after Orgeron led the Tigers to a national championship with what is considered one of the greatest teams in college football history. The timing of the decision came as a surprise — the day after the Tigers upset Florida — though the end for Coach O at LSU seemed to be approaching soon after a blowout loss last week to Kentucky. Orgeron is 49-17 with the Tigers, including 15-0 in 2019 when Joe Burrow won a Heisman Trophy and LSU its third national championship since 2003. Orgeron replaced Les Miles, who had also won a national title with the Tigers.

UNDATED (AP) — Cincinnati has moved up to No. 2 behind Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll for the best ranking for a team from outside the traditional power conferences since 2010. The Bulldogs remained a unanimous No. 1. The Bearcats inched up a spot, taking advantage of Iowa’s loss to Purdue. The Hawkeyes dropped nine places to No. 11, while the Boilermakers moved into the rankings at No. 25. Purdue was last ranked in 2007. Oklahoma is No. 3, followed by Alabama and Ohio State. Michigan is No. 6, followed by Penn State, Oklahoma State, Michigan State and Oregon. No. 24 Texas-San Antonio is ranked for the first time in the history of the program.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals are down another key piece because of COVID-19 as they try to remain undefeated against the Browns. Already missing coach Kliff Kingsbury and star linebacker Chandler Jones due to positive tests, Arizona placed defensive lineman Corey Peters on the reserve/COVID-19 hours before today’s game at Cleveland. The Cardinals are also without quarterbacks coach Cam Turner and defensive tackle Zach Allen. For the Browns, starting right tackle Jack Conklin and starting left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. are out with injuries, along with star running back Nick Chubb.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — The Washington Football Team retired late safety Sean Taylor’s No. 21 during halftime of the team’s game against Kansas City. Members of his family stood around a framed burgundy jersey on the field during the ceremony, which was not announced until Thursday. Fans, many of them holding white “21” towels, chanted “Sean Taylor” as the festivities came to an end. The team was criticized by fans and alumni for not giving them more notice about honoring Taylor, who was murdered in 2007 after a botched robbery attempt at his home in Florida. Washington had alumni in attendance for its annual “Homecoming Weekend.”

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Ben Simmons practiced with the Philadelphia 76ers today for the first time this season. Coach Doc Rivers says no decision was made on Simmons’ status for Wednesday’s season opener. Simmons was a holdout for training camp and the early part of the preseason in the wake of his offseason trade demand. The three-time All-Star guard made a surprise return to the team on Monday. The Sixers open the season at New Orleans and play their home opener Friday against Brooklyn.
