Pine River Area Schools have announced they will be canceling the remaining of their Varsity football season.

In a press release, superintendent Matt Lukshaitis stated that after investigating allegations concerning bullying and harassment, it has become apparent that their varsity football team has developed a toxic culture.

The investigation grew into a handful of investigations, all stemming from similar incidents where bullying and harassment have been discovered.

The superintendent stated that not every player on the varsity football team has actively taken part, however, many members of the team stood idly by and said nothing while these things occurred creating a culture of hazing and bullying.

He said that if the were to remove all those involved or who stood by, they would be left with not enough players to even dress out a team.

The school apologized to the district, administration, coaches, and the families and communities for the cancellation.
