Bucs outlast Cowboys...Steelers ink Watt to extension
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady threw for 366 yards and four touchdowns as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened their Super Bowl title defense with a 31-29 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Brady marched the Bucs down field and led a drive that ended with Ryan Succop (SUH’-kuhp) hitting a 36-yard field goal attempt with two seconds remaining. Dak Prescott kept the Cowboys close by throwing for 403 yards and three scores.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers have made outside linebacker T.J. Watt the highest-paid defensive player in the league. A person with knowledge of the agreement tells The Associated Press that the 26-year-old Watt has signed a four-year extension worth $112 million. Watt’s 49 1/2 sacks over his first four seasons rank sixth all time by a player over that span.
NEW YORK (AP) — If you bet on Emma Raducanu (ra-doo-KAN’-oo) to face Leylah Fernandez in the U.S. Open women’s final before the tournament began, then you just made a ton of money after the two unseeded players won their semifinal matches last night. The 18-year-old Raducanu became the first qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final in the professional era by overwhelming 17th-seeded Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4. The 19-year-old Fernandez entered the tournament ranked 73rd, but she’s in the final following a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win against second seed Aryan Sabalenka.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Yankees starter Jameson Taillon was added to the 10-day injured list with a partial tear of a tendon in his right ankle. The reeling Yankees are feeling more optimistic about ace Gerrit Cole, who left a start Tuesday with left hamstring tightness. Cole played catch Thursday and plans to throw a bullpen Friday or Saturday with an eye toward a return to game action Monday or Tuesday.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Center DeAndre Jordan has signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, adding another seasoned NBA veteran to their experienced roster. The 13-year NBA veteran spent his first 10 seasons down the Staples Center hallway with the Clippers. Jordan led the league in field goal percentage five times and won two rebounding titles during his decade with the Clippers.
