NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch) was able to turn a lousy opening set into a berth in the U.S. Open quarterfinals as he tries to complete the first calendar Grand Slam by a male since Rod Laver in 1969. The top-ranked Djokovic pulled out a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over American Jenson Brooksby. Djokovic was broken twice in the opening set, which he lost in just 29 minutes.
NEW YORK (AP) — Emma Raducanu and Belinda Bencic (BEHN’-chihch) have advanced to the U.S. Open women's quarterfinals. The 18-year-old Raducanu routed American Shelby Rogers 6-2, 6-1 to join fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez in the women’s last eight. Bencic beat Iga Swiatek 7-6, 6-3 to make the last eight in Flushing Meadows for the third time.
UNDATED (AP) — Head coach Sean Payton says the New Orleans Saints expect the Dallas area and TCU practice facilities to serve as their home base into at least Week 2 of the NFL season. The Saints were displaced by Hurricane Ida and had a closed practice indoors Monday at TCU. They will be there at the very least until they fly to Jacksonville to play Green Bay in a regular-season opener that had been originally scheduled for the Superdome.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens agreed to a four-year, $56 million contract extension with tight end Mark Andrews, locking him up through 2025. Andrews was a Pro Bowler in 2019, when he caught 64 passes for 852 yards and 10 touchdowns. He leads all NFL tight ends with ’ 17 receiving TDs since 2019.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance showed signs of progress in returning from a finger injury, but there are still questions about whether he will be able to play in the season opener. Lance no longer needed a splint on the index finger on his throwing hand after suffering a small chip fracture in the exhibition finale on Aug. 29. But during the open portion of practice for reporters, Lance didn’t make any throws.
