Storm threat...Kike Hernandez has COVID-19...DeChambeau hot
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The kickoff for Saturday’s preseason game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Saints at the Superdome has been moved up seven hours because of the potential for Hurricane Ida to hit the Louisiana coast by Sunday. The Saints announced the game will start at noon Central Time and that the change was agreed upon after consultation with city officials in New Orleans, the National Weather Service, The Department of Homeland Security and the NFL. The National Hurricane Center warns that Ida has hallmarks of a rapidly intensifying storm that could slam into Louisiana as a Category 3 hurricane.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Boston Red Sox infielder Kiké Hernández has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be sidelined indefinitely. Manager Alex Cora said Hernández is experiencing symptoms. He’ll be placed on the COVID-19 list along with second baseman Christian Arroyo, who had close contact with Hernández. Cora would not divulge whether Hernández is vaccinated. The Red Sox are in the thick of the playoff race as they open a three-game series against Cleveland.
CLEVELAND (AP) — A person familiar with the trade tells The Associated Press that the Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to acquire restricted free agent forward Lauri Markkanen from Chicago in a three-way trade. The deal also will send forward Larry Nance Jr. from Cleveland to Portland. Markkanen is coming to the Cavs in a sign-and-trade agreement. The Bulls are getting swingman Derrick Jones Jr. from the Trail Blazers along with a lottery-protected 2022 first-round pick.
LOUISVILLE, Ky (AP) — The University of Louisville is suspending head basketball coach Chris Mack for six games. University officials say he failed to properly handle an extortion attempt by his assistant Dino Gaudio. Prosecutors say Gaudio demanded nearly a half-million dollars when he learned he’d be fired over the team missing the NCAA tournament, and said he’d tell the news media about violations if he didn’t get the money. Mack says he accepts the suspension and “could have handled matters differently.” He’ll be out for six nonconference games in November. Gaudio was sentenced in federal court Friday to probation and a $10,000 fine for the attempted extortion.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — There was no stopping Bryson DeChambeau at Caves Valley. He overpowered the vulnerable Maryland course and was on the cusp of a 58 or even a 59 until missing birdie chances on the last two holes. He still shot a 60 in the BMW Championship. That gives him a one-shot lead over Patrick Cantlay. He shot 63 in the more conventional manner and hardly anyone noticed. The second round still isn’t complete because of a weather delay.
