SCOTUS to Allow Evictions to Resume
The Supreme Court - is allowing evictions to resume across the U.S. once again blocking the Biden administration from enforcing a temporary ban that was put in place because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The court said in an unsigned opinion that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which re-imposed the moratorium August 3rd, lacked the authority to do so under federal law without explicit congressional authorization.
The court's action late Thursday ends protections for roughly 3.5 million people who said they faced eviction in the next two months.
The moratorium had been reinstated to allow more federal rent aid to be sent out.
President Biden called on states and localities to boost distribution.
Nearly a million households *were helped, but only about 11% of the money has been distributed.
A handful of states have do, however, have *their own temporary bans on evictions.
