Taliban warns U.S. not to stay past August 31
The Taliban warned any attempt by U.S. troops to delay their withdrawal, while a shooting outside the Kabul airport Monday killed an Afghan soldier and wounded multiple civilians.
The shooting came as the Taliban moved to shore up their position and eliminate pockets of armed resistance to their takeover.
Tens of thousands of Afghans have sought to flee the country. This has led to chaos at the airport in Kabul.
President Biden has not ruled out extending the evacuation beyond August 31st when U.S. forces are set to complete their pullout.
But the Taliban threatened that date is a red line and any stay after would “provoke a reaction.”
Some are pressuring the U.S. for an extension, but there is progress. American forces reported their largest evacuation total yet over the past day - around 16,000 people. That's nearly half of the 37,000 flown out in the past week.
