JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The NFL's No. 1 overall draft pick makes his preseason debut this evening. Trevor Lawrence will be in uniform when coach Urban Meyer’s Jacksonville Jaguars play the Browns. Earlier this week, Meyer declined to identify a starter for the game, despite Lawrence outperforming incumbent Gardner Minshew daily in training camp. Meyer says he wants “healthy competition” at every position and both will play against the Browns. Cleveland will not be playing quarterback Baker Mayfield.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Zach Wilson, the No. 2 choice in the NFL draft, will be at quarterback for the Jets in their preseason opener against the Giants tonight. A shaky performance in front of several thousand fans in the team’s scrimmage at MetLife Stadium last Saturday night had Wilson acknowledging that he was “not great” — and some panicking that the Jets may have picked the wrong guy. But coach Robert Saleh, after warning things are “going to get worse before it gets better,” described Wilson as “awesome” and handling things well. Meanwhile, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones won’t play.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Being better on defense shouldn’t be that challenging for the Tennessee Titans following a season where it would be tough to be much worse. The Titans looked like a completely different unit in their preseason opener after an offseason makeover. Two of their top offseason additions didn’t play, but the Titans did more than just pressure the quarterback while getting off the field on third down regularly in a 23-3 win over Atlanta. Coach Mike Vrabel says they have a standard they try to live to and want to play to, and the Titans did that on defense.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has announced transfer Jack Coan will be the Fighting Irish's starting quarterback. Coan started for Wisconsin in 2019, leading the Badgers to the Big Ten title game. He completed 70% of his passes and threw for 18 touchdowns. But Coan broke his foot before last season’s abbreviated Big Ten schedule began and did not play. The Irish are looking to replace long-time starter Ian Book.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Will Power took the lead early Saturday, then watched it shrink over the final half of the race before holding on to win another Indianapolis Grand Prix. The Australian, who started second, beat Romain Grosjean to the yard of bricks by 1.1142 seconds for his first win of the season. It was his fifth win on Indy’s 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course. Power led 56 of 85 laps and earned his 38th career victory, breaking a tie with Al Unser for fifth in series history.
